Robin

My Experiences with Robins

Where I grew up the robins would arrive back from the south just after April first. The reason that I remember that is that a favorite April Fool joke was to say: "Oh, look at the robin in the front yard!" When your intended victim looked you could then yell "APRIL FOOL!!!!!" One year, however, the joke was on me. I pulled my usual April Fool joke and there really was a robin in the front yard. My daddy got a big kick out of that one.

Once I got to be old enough to walk to my grandmother's house by my self, I would talk to the pair of robins who choose to live nearby. I called them Robby and Ruth Robin. They got used to the sound of my voice I guess because after a while they didn't even bother to fly when I came along. They just kept right on searching for worms in the grass. I used to write stories featuring them as characters. The setting was the yard and the tree where they build their nest.
